Alex was 8 years old when his father died. With 7 children to support, his mother began selling vegetables and dried fish. Despite her hard work, resources were never enough to provide for the children’s school fees and supplies. By God’s grace, Alex and his siblings were eventually sponsored by an organization willing to cover a portion of their schooling needs. With help from the sponsorship, Alex attended a private high school all the way to S6 ( grade 12) and took the national exams required for entry to university. His dream to become a high school teacher hinged on procuring a university scholarship based primarily on academics. Average scores closed the door to a scholarship and being aged out of the organization, Alex returned home to find another way to complete his education. Hoping for another chance at a scholarship, he earned enough to attend S6 again and retake the national exam. Once again, no scholarship opportunities were available. Tenaciously, Alex began making bricks and charcoal to earn his own way to university. After working for 3 years, he had saved a mere 270$, barely enough to cover his first semester. Now in Launch Uganda, Alex’s dreams of educating and inspiring others to persevere will finally become a reality.
